Material Treatment of Malleable Iron Fittings and grooved pipe fittings
Malleable iron is a type of cast iron that is treated to impart malleability and toughness.
Casting
Fittings are first cast from white iron, which is hard and brittle. The chemical composition is carefully controlled, typically with around 2.5% carbon and 1.5% silicon.
Annealing
This is the critical heat treatment process. The white iron castings are heated to high temperatures (around 900-970°C or 1650-1780°F) for an extended period (often 20-100 hours) in a controlled atmosphere. During this process, the hard iron carbides in the white iron decompose into graphite nodules (temper carbon) within a softer ferrite or pearlite matrix. This transformation significantly improves ductility and machinability.
Grooved Pipe Fittings: Understanding Material, Size, and Pressure Capabilities
Grooved pipe fittings represent a modern and efficient method for joining pipes, offering advantages in speed of installation, flexibility, and maintenance. Their characteristics are defined by the robust materials used, extensive size availability, and reliable pressure performance.
Material Treatment of Grooved Pipe Fittings
Malleable iron is a type of cast iron that is treated to impart malleability and toughness. The process typically involves
Material Composition
Our groove pipe fittings are made of ductile iron, using materials with tensile strength and corrosion resistance no lower than ductile iron QT450-12, in compliance with the relevant standards
Casting and Machining
Fittings are precision cast and then machined to create the groove that accommodates the coupling gasket and housing.
Surface Coatings
The coating on groove fittings is designed to prevent corrosion and is suitable for use in fire sprinkler systems, building water supply systems, HVAC systems, etc.
Side-by-Side Comparison: Malleable Iron vs. Grooved Fittings
| Feature | Malleable Iron Fittings | Grooved Pipe Fittings |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Material | Malleable Cast Iron | Ductile Iron |
| Key Material Property | Good strength, machinability, moderate ductility | Higher strength, excellent ductility, impact resistance |
| Common Surface Treatments | Hot-Dip Galvanized | Painted |
| Typical Size Range | 1/2" - 4" (DN15 - DN100) | OD76-OD219 |
| Common Pressure Classes/Ratings | Class 150 up to 300 PSI | Class 150 up to 300 PSI |
| Connection Method | Threaded (NPT, BSPT) | Grooved (Mechanical joint with couplings and gaskets) |
| Installation Speed | Slower, requires threading, sealing compounds/tape | Faster, no threading or welding, simple bolt tightening |
| Flexibility/Vibration Dampening | Rigid connection | Can offer flexibility (with flexible couplings), good vibration/noise dampening |
| Maintenance & Modification | More labor-intensive to disassemble/modify | Easier to disassemble, modify, and expand |
| Cost (Initial Fitting Cost) | Generally lower per fitting | Higher per fitting/coupling assembly |
| Cost (Installed Cost) | Can be higher due to labor | Often lower due to reduced labor time |
| Common Applications | Plumbing, gas lines, oil, general industrial | Fire protection, HVAC, industrial process piping, water/wastewater |
